Check out the bands vying to win the Milwaukee finals round of the international Emergenza competition. The acts below are scheduled to perform Saturday at The Rave, and the winner will advance to regional finals that will be held in Detroit on June 4.

Acts are listed in the order they are scheduled to appear:

Fever: The Milwaukee four-piece, formed in 2004, specializes in melodic pop-rock, from the upbeat ("Bury My Lovely") to the unhinged ("Afternoon Delight"). www.getthefever.com.

Naych: The Fox Valley-Hartford quintet merges its influences, from classic rock to grunge, into richly textured hard rock. www.naychmusic.com.

Shallow Ground: Intense and relentless extreme metal from the band that defines its roots as "Wisconsin . . . where the weak are killed and eaten." www.shallowground.net.

Strange Land: The tight Brewtown trio, led by bassist Chad Novell's impressive vocals, leans toward the metal end of the prog-rock continuum. www.strange-land.net.

Ultra Magnus: A young, Hartford-based band with cocky attitude and a melodic post-grunge sound. www.ultramagnusband.com.

Catch of the Day: The seven-piece act out of Slinger updates ska and reggae with a punchy rock edge. www.cotd-ska.com.

Drop Test: A four-piece with roots in Milwaukee and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, the group blends an eclectic mix of hard rock, alt-metal, jazz and rootsier influences into an exuberant brew. www.droptestmusic.com.

Neverstatic: Proving unplugged doesn't always mean quiet or mellow, the rootsy Milwaukee quintet rocks out with acoustic instruments. www.neverstatic.net.

The Boombox Republic: The recently formed West Allis-Muskego quintet has roots in jazz and improvisational rock but throws in punk, reggae and hip-hop in its live show. They're so new their Web site is still in the works.

Defy: The Milwaukee quartet takes old-school metal influences and tweaks them into something fresh without resorting to nu-metal cliché. www.defyband.com.

Elatia: The West Allis three-piece revels in the contradiction of creating atmospheric music that's both ethereal and heavy. www.elatiaband.com.

Marashino: Authentic, catchy pop-rock from one of the area's most avidly adored bands - just check out the giddy fan postings on its Web site. www.marashinomusic.com.

Sidetract: Rap, rock and thrash metal intersect in this Milwaukee act with the intensity of a head-on collision. www.sidetract.com.

Way to Fall: The four-piece creates lush and surprising rock with a melancholic edge in the studio, but gets heavier and more in your face in a live setting. www.waytofall.com.
